Why add a heat pump to a furnace or boiler for a dual fuel set-up

    • Heat pumps are highly efficient because they transfer heat rather than generate it. They do this by extracting heat from the outside air, even in colder temperatures. This means they use less energy compared to a furnace or boiler, particularly during mild winter days.

    • A dual fuel system combines the efficiency of a heat pump for moderate temperatures with the reliability of a gas furnace or boiler in extreme cold.

    • Gas may be sold at a lower rate to electricity, which is a heat pump’s energy source. However, heat pumps require less energy overall to run. The beauty of a dual fuel system ensures you're only using gas when the heat pump isn't effective enough (in extremely cold temperatures), likely lowering your overall heating costs.

    • Heat pumps require regular maintenance (e.g., cleaning filters, checking refrigerant levels, etc.), but in general, they have lower ongoing operational costs than gas furnaces. Gas furnaces tend to require more frequent maintenance (e.g., checking burners, cleaning vents, ensuring proper gas flow) and can be more expensive to repair when issues arise.

    • Today’s technologically advanced heat pumps provide more consistent, even heat, compared to a furnace or boiler that might have fluctuations between cycles. This leads to better comfort in your home.

    • In very cold temperatures, the gas system will take over when the heat pump becomes less efficient, ensuring that your home stays warm even in the coldest Colorado winters. This dual system ensures year-round comfort.

    • Since heat pumps don’t burn any fuel, it will improve the overall air quality in your home.

  • Many utilities (including the 4 we’re partnering with on this program) and the State of Colorado offer significant rebates and incentives for installing energy-efficient systems like heat pumps. This helps offset some of the initial installation costs.
