Adding a heat pump to a furnace for a dual fuel set-up saves money.
-
Heat pumps are highly efficient because they transfer heat rather than generate it. They do this by extracting heat from the outside air, even in colder temperatures. This means they use less energy compared to a furnace, particularly during mild winter days.
A dual fuel system combines the efficiency of a heat pump for moderate temperatures with the reliability of a propane furnace in extreme cold. This can save you money on heating bills since the heat pump will handle the majority of your heating needs during less severe weather, only switching to propane when necessary.
-
Propane is expensive to rely on as your main heating source. A heat pump uses electricity, which is often cheaper than propane, particularly during milder months. The dual fuel system ensures you're only using propane when the heat pump isn't effective enough (in extremely cold temperatures), lowering your overall heating costs. Though there are certain heat pumps designed to operate in extreme cold, they can be more expensive to install.
Although the initial installation of a dual fuel system might be more expensive, over time you can save on heating costs due to the efficiency of the heat pump and the reduced reliance on propane. Additionally, heat pumps typically last longer than traditional furnaces, meaning less frequent replacements and maintenance costs.
-
Today’s technologically advanced heat pumps provide more consistent, even heat, compared to a furnace that might have fluctuations between cycles. This leads to better comfort in your home.
In very cold temperatures, the propane furnace will take over when the heat pump becomes less efficient, ensuring that your home stays warm even in the coldest Colorado winters. This dual system ensures year-round comfort.
Since heat pumps don’t burn any fuel, it will improve the overall air quality in your home.
-
Many utilities (including the 4 we’re partnering with on this program) and the State of Colorado offer rebates and incentives for installing energy-efficient systems like heat pumps. This helps offset some of the initial installation costs.
