Heat Pumps

Heat pumps keep your home perfectly comfortable — warm in the winter, cool in the summer — all with one efficient system.

Instead of producing heat by burning gas or other fossil fuels, heat pumps use electricity to move heat, even in extreme temperatures, making them 2-4X more efficient than traditional technology like furnaces or boilers.

How Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps get their name from what they do — move heat. It will move it toward your home when it’s cold and away when it’s warm.

1

In summer, heat pumps pull heat from the air inside your home and move it outside. This results in a cooler, more comfortable home.

2

In cold weather, heat pumps work in reverse. It will pull heat from the outside and move it inside — even when it’s well below freezing.

Heat Pumps in Your Home

Whether you have existing ductwork or none at all, there’s a heat pump design that’s perfect for you.

Ducted Heat Pumps

As a centralized heating and cooling solution, it can provide comfort to multiple rooms at once by way of existing ducts.

Ductless Heat Pumps

Also called mini splits or multi splits, they heat and cool room-by-room. Less visible designs are available.

Heat pumps work even in frigid temperatures.

Comparing Heat Pumps & Furnaces

What’s The Difference?

  • Heat pumps are highly efficient because they transfer heat rather than generate it, as a furnace does. They do this by extracting heat from the outside air, even in colder temperatures. This means they use less energy compared to an furnace.

    • Gas is sometimes sold at a lower rate to electricity, which is a heat pump’s power source. However, heat pumps require less energy overall to run.

    • Heat pumps require regular maintenance (e.g., cleaning filters, checking refrigerant levels, etc.), but in general, they have lower ongoing operational costs than gas furnaces. Gas furnaces tend to require more frequent maintenance (e.g., checking burners, cleaning vents, ensuring proper gas flow) and can be more expensive to repair when issues arise.

    • Today’s technologically advanced heat pumps provide more consistent, even heat, compared to a furnace or boiler that might have fluctuations between cycles. This leads to better comfort in your home.

    • Since heat pumps don’t burn any fuel, it will improve the overall air quality in your home.

  • Many utilities and governments offer significant rebates and incentives for installing energy-efficient systems like heat pumps. This helps offset some of the initial installation costs.

Rebates are typically much higher for heat pumps compared to new gas systems, which might not have any discounts at all.
